SoCal Loco!

Originally we intended for our family SoCal trip to be part of our Be Bayou World Tour. But after 11 wedding events in less than 9 months, we decided we needed a break from all the festivities and turned it into a family surf trip! David rented us a "surf van" that turned out to be little more than a DIY Chrysler mini van with a homemade platform bed in lieu of a middle seat and a sink in the trunk. Definitely did not meet expectations, but certainly a van to remember!

We arrived at our camp site in Malibu after dark and with our mind's eye set up the pop up tent for David and Liam to crash. The next morning we went to a decadent and surprisingly affordable brunch in Malibu, making us realize even more deeply just how expensive normal life is in the Bay Area.

After brunch we met dear friend Carlos for a surf in Malibu! We were told wetsuits were not needed and this family of NorCal surfers was completely unprepared for the warmish SoCal water and abundance of sun on our bare skin. In between surfs we warmed up in the sun and two weeks later are still recovering from our burns! David especially, he got a cellular sunburn so bad that he couldn't walk for a week.

Though we weren't able to continue our surf trip as planned due to David's inability to move without pain, we very much enjoyed time at home with Tatiana, Carlos, and Sasha in Venice over the 4th enjoying delicious meals including s'mores on the open fire, touring around Venice, and having robust discussions about what it means to be free. Thank y'all so much for being such lovely hosts, the boys loved y'all's home and want to come down again already!

We arrived home in Pacifica after a long day of driving on the 4th in time to set off fireworks at home and the beach. Liam let his inner pyromaniac loose and we all lived happily ever after, with another quirky story to share!

Cheers to our highly imperfect perfect SoCal "surf" trip!
